About the archive
Wiki Sudan is a community-built archive preserving Sudan’s written history — free to read, fully bilingual, and open to anyone. It exists because a country’s history should not depend on which library survives a war, or on how close a reader happens to live to one.
Why this exists
Sudan’s libraries, archives, and manuscript collections have been damaged and looted during the war — some of this material may not survive in its original home. At the same time, a large Sudanese diaspora has little practical way to reach what does survive: books scattered across foreign libraries, editions long out of print, and manuscripts never digitised in the first place. This archive gathers what can be found, checks what can lawfully be shared, and makes it available to read from anywhere.
What we host, and what we only link to
We only host works that are in the public domain or carry a licence that openly permits it. Every hosted book displays its licence plainly, and can be read online or downloaded in full. Works we have catalogued but cannot lawfully host — because their copyright status is unclear or still protected — are never copied here. Instead, the archive records their details and links directly to the library or repository where they can legally be found. This boundary is not a technicality; it is the reason the archive can exist openly at all.
How it is built
Works are discovered from open digital repositories and checked for their licence before anything is added. The text of every hosted page is produced by optical character recognition (OCR), which means it can and does contain errors — misread words, broken lines, the occasional garbled sentence. Readers who spot one can report it directly from the page they are reading. Every work in the archive records where it came from, so its origin is never hidden. This is a growing, imperfect, honest project — not a finished or definitive edition of anything.
