Among the reasons for the revelation of some surahs: Some of them are agreed upon by the exegetes, and some of them they differed about. Among them is what the two Sheikhs narrated in their authentic collections from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Jews said: O Muhammad, Allah has revealed to us a book, and taught us what was revealed, and He revealed to you a book, and you have learned what was revealed. We only find in the Torah that the Lord is most angry with the Jews. So we brought Moses son of Imran, and the scholars of the Jews. Then Allah revealed to you: "Say, O people, I am the Messenger of Allah to you all, to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death. So believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered prophet, who believes in Allah and His words, and follow him, so that you may be guided." They said: By God, we do not find this in our book. Then Allah revealed: "And We have sent down to you the Book with the truth, confirming what was before it of the Book, and a guardian over it," to His saying, "And believe in what has been sent down to you."

Among them is what Muslim narrated in his authentic collection from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Prophet, peace be upon him, passed by a grave, and said: "This is the grave of my brother Habr. So pray to Allah to relieve him from the punishment of the grave."

Among them is what Ibn Majah narrated in his Sunan from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "When Allah sends down punishment upon His servants, He looks to see if there is anyone among them who buys, or is called, or bequeaths. If so, the punishment is postponed from them."
